Waiting for biopsy results after calcifications found on mammogram

I recently had a recall. A week of stress and then the appt where they told me straight away I was having a biopsy. I was too in shock to ask why and in tears. Honestly an emotional wreck. Anyway I had a physical exam, followed by a contrast mammogram that was a weird sensation followed by ultrasound and then a biopsy. Ultrasound found nothing no lesions she said no asymatary  so that was good. I’m still in shock awaiting results for calcification cluster. Anyone been in the same position? Already wrote myself off in my head which is ridiculous I know.

  • Heya.

All you can do is to wait. We are all here for you. Never do give up on yourself however. Keep us updated. There are lots of helpful resources which are freely available online. MacMillan have a huge number of advice booklets in addition that is always worth a read. Take a look at some. Best wishes.

  • It's an awful thing to go through, I know, but keep in mind that you haven't been told that you have cancer. Of the people who are called in, 4 out of 5 don't have it. Even for those who do, early detection is a life saver. I was the number 5 and I had breast cancer, but it was treated very quickly. I had an amazing surgeon and nurses and I could contact them for anything I needed. Try to distract yourself for now and remember that you were called in because they wanted to check again, not because it's a definite diagnosis. Take care of yourself and I wish you good news soon. • Also there are relaxation videos and so on on YouTube.

  • Thank you it’s because they said biopsy before I’d had any recall tests. I’m just imagining the worse. No lumps or anything so it’s very early.

  • Try not to do that. Distract yourself.

  • Hi Diggerdoo,

A very warm welcomer to the forum,

The three tests you mention are usually carried out at the first appointment. The mammogram and ultrasound can detect a lump, but cannot say whether it is cancerous or not. Only the biopsy can determine this. Most of us imagine the worst as this stage, but fortunately, only 20% of those who do attend the breast clinic will get a cancer diagnosis.

It is good to hear that your ultrasound didn't show any lesion, so here's hoping that you get good news when you return for the biopsy results .Please keep in touch and let us know the outcome. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks so much for replying, you don’t know how much your advice has already helped me on previous threads. I don’t mind the outcome so much because it’s early days and so curable but I’m just in shock tbh with everything happening so quick.

  • Hi Diggerdoo,

Most of us feel that our lives are taken over for a while after we get a cancer diagnosis. It's like being on the world's largest roller coaster and unable to get off! It does all get easier to cope with once you've had some time to assimilate the news and start treatment.

I am delighted to hear that you have found some of my other posts helpful and am always here for you. My own cancer was caught early. Unfortunately, I had a diagnosis of pre-cancer in my other breast 6 months after surgery and found a second cancer in my original breast with the year. I then had a double mastectomy. Despite these set backs, I am fortunate enough to be here 16 years later and living a busy and fulfilling life. It sounds as if you have a positive outlook to this, which is so helpful as you travel this journey.

When I had a mammogram recall it was for calcification, but fortunately nothing abnormal was detected when I attended for the follow-up appointment - I  sincerely hope that you'll be equally fortunate!

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks loads I haven’t told my children yet due to unnecessary stress for them and keep rehearsing the conversations in my head. It’s a journey I never expected to be on and I’m sort of expecting the worst due to them saying biopsy before they even checked again after mamogram but we will get through it. So lovely that you are 16 years post and I hope to inspire others in the future whatever the outcome because it certainly grounds you

    thanks again Diggerdoo
