Granulomatous Mastitis and pregnancy

Hi, I was first diagnosed last year, had around 4 months of antibiotics and it settled. Dormant until December when another lump came back. Diagnosed as GM again, this time developed an abcess in March and finally found an antibiotic that seemed to help.
However, I’ve just found out I’m pregnant (unexpected) so now looking at dealing with this disease during pregnancy. My anxiety is through the roof about how bad it could get, and about taking antibiotics while pregnant, especially this first trimester when there’s no real data on the effects… just wondering if anyone has any experience with this?

I did join the GM facebook group and posted on there, however found it only added to my anxiety as the majority of members seem to be American and have very different treatment plans to what we have here, and all made me feel a lot worse about being on the antibiotic I’ve been on (clindamycin, checked with my consultant and she’s said it’s “generally considered safe during pregnancy”) I’m very anxious about it though and feel massive guilt that I’ve damaged the baby by being on it.
Any experience or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi SJ38 and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I can completely understand why you are feeling anxious during the first trimester of your pregnancy. This is often a time when anything can make you worry about the baby but if I were you, for complete reassurance, I would talk to your doctor or medical team and they will be able to tell you whether it was ok to take those antibiotics. Don't let the anxiety get the better of you though - talk to someone who knows about these things so that you can be reassured and relieved and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

Breast Cancer Now has information on granulomatous mastitis which is a rare but benign breast condition. If you type the keywords 'granulomatous mastitis' in our forum search bar at the top, you will be able to see other past relevant threads on granulomatous mastitis and don't hesitate to respond to anyone you feel you would like to connect with. For example,  posted this thread on granulomatous mastitis and  also shared their granulomatous mastitis experience so don't hesitate to respond to them if you wish.

Our nurse helpline is also open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm on this free number 0808 800 4040 so don't hesitate to call if there's anything you would like to talk through with them.

I hope that you get to talk to someone about this soon and that you feel reassured soon so you can enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

Best of luck for the coming weeks and months!

    Best wishes,
