Adult who had Rhabdomyosarcoma as a child - has anyone else had this? Wanting to find out how this may affect fertility

Hi,

I don’t know if this is the appropriate place to ask about this, but I’m not sure where to find other people who might have experience with this area.

My lovely boyfriend told me last night that he had Rhabdomyosarcoma as a child, originating in his testicle. He told me that he doesn’t know for sure, but there is a chance that the treatment he went through may affect his fertility. We aren’t at the point where we are trying to conceive, but it is something we would like to happen in our future.
We have discussed perhaps speaking with drs to investigate whether or not his fertility has been affected. He doesn’t really remember having cancer or the treatment particularly well, but I have lots of questions and I feel bad asking when it’s not something he remembers much about.
Has anybody been through something similar?

thanks in advance <3

  • Hello Mango1423

I'm sorry to hear that your boyfriend had treatment for rhabdomyosarcoma as a child. It's understandable that you both have some questions about whether this may have impacted his fertility as you begin to think about starting a family of your own.

It might be a good idea to start by writing down all the questions that you have; that way, you won't forget to ask anything that you feel is important. If your boyfriend wants to make an appointment with his GP, then you could both go along, and hopefully, they will be able to give you some answers and advice. If you'd like to chat with one of our nurses about your questions, you're also most welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I do hope that you can get some answers.

    Best wishes,
