Total thyroidectomy - was this the right treatment to have?

Just wanted to say hello. I had a total thyroidectomy and radioactive iodine 23 yrs ago but never seen an endocrinologist or had thyroid hormone treatment. Starting to think is this what I should of had as only ever had a yearly bloods test and checkup.

  • Hello Cazzer

I'm sorry to hear that you underwent a total thyroidectomy and radioactive iodine treatment some 20+ years ago. It's important to remember that treatments for cancer do change over time, and it's possible that what was the best recommended care has changed over time.

I'm unsure from your posts if your yearly blood tests and check-ups have ever shown any problems, or if there is a particular reason that you've started to wonder if you had the correct treatment. It's certainly worth talking with your GP about any concerns that you have. Hopefully, they will be able to give you some reassurance.

Alternatively, if you'd like to talk things through with one of our team of nurses, you're most welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I do hope you can get the answers and reassurance you need.

    Best wishes,
