Swallowing issues after radiotherapy

Hi,i have SCLC had 3 months of chemotherapy, then 15 sessions of radiotherapy. I have lymph nodes involvement on my oesophagus which was also treated with the radiotherapy. It's been 3 weeks now since treatment and i am struggling to eat and drink due to issues swallowing because of pain. Also coughing up copious amount of phlegm. Has anyone else had this, and how long did it last.I was hospitalised last week due to being dehydrated, but thing aren't improving, really scared I'm going to be left with this.

  • Hello Mirren

I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling so much with side effects from the radiotherapy that you've recently been through for SCLC.

We have a few members here on the forum who have struggled with similar issues for you, although the type of cancer that they may have had is different. I'd suggest having a look through some of the comments on this post about radiotherapy for throat cancer. Members will have shared some of their tips and advice for coping with the phlegm and discomfort.  From the many posts I've read here over the years, 3 weeks after radiotherapy is still early days, as treatment side effects can continue for a number of weeks after treatment ends.

Do talk through your concerns with your specialist cancer nurse, but if you're also most welcome to give our team of nurses a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. If you'd like to talk with them, they're available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040 (excluding bank holidays).

I hope that things begin to improve for you over the coming days and weeks, Mirren. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We're here for you.

    Best wishes,
