Completely unexpected diagnosis - just found out my husband has lung cancer and only has a few months left to live. I can't believe this is happening

Have recently been told my husband has only a few months left to live. He has lung cancer but had not suffered with any symptoms. It was only discovered when he got pneumonia 2 weeks ago and needed a chest X-ray. He knows he can’t have treatment but he doesn’t know and doesn’t want to know his life expectancy. I can’t believe this is happening.

  • Hi Scarlet_1661,

I am so sorry about your husband's lung cancer diagnosis and that you have been told that he only has a few months left to live. It must have been such a shock for you all especially as he had not suffered any symptoms. It's so sad that he can't have treatment and it's completely understandable that he doesn't want to know his life expectancy - and it's worth also remembering that life expectancy estimates are not always very accurate and it can be really hard to predict what a prognosis might be.

I am sure he appreciates having you by his side during this difficult time and I hope that you are managing to have as much quality time with him as possible. Looking after a loved one with cancer is not easy and I wanted to share with you our information for family, friends and caregivers which has useful tips on supporting someone with cancer.

I can imagine this is all so hard for you at the moment and you are probably still feeling under shock and I just wanted you to know you are not alone on the forum and I hope that others who've been through something similar will come along shortly to share their experience with you. If you have any questions or simply feel the need to talk things through, our nurses are available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Best wishes to you and your husband,
