Skin cancer worry - had a call this morning to say I need to have a face to face appointment. Does this mean I have cancer?

I developed what I thought was a pimple on my face about 6 weeks ago that hasn't gone away. GP referred me to dermatology under 2ww. I had an AI photo assessment 2 days ago, and have received a call this morning from a receptionist saying I need to come for a face to face appointment a week from today. I am terrified. I suffer badly from health anxiety. Does this mean I definitely have skin cancer?

  • Hi Worried-Anxioud,

It's normal to be terrified but the face to face appointment will be an opportunity to get a proper assessment and see a specialist who will have the expertise that will lead to a diagnosis. You did well to go and see the GP when you noticed this pimple on your face that wouldn't go away and I am sure that you will find out more soon and get some reassurance. Being anxious is perfectly normal especially if you suffer from health anxiety so try and tell yourself that it is the anxiety speaking and making you fear the worst when cancer is the least likely outcome. If the health anxiety gets too bad and interferes with your life, do talk to a doctor about it so you get some help with it.

Many of our members know how hard it is to have to wait to be seen and then wait again for a diagnosis so I thought I would share with you our helpful tips on how to cope while waiting for important news. One important tip to follow to ease your anxiety is to keep well away from the temptation to look things up on Google as this will only make you feel worse without giving you any accurate or reliable answers.

I hope that you will hear from other members of our forum who have had similar worries before and that they will be along shortly to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that the appointment goes well and that it all turns out to be nothing of concern,

    Best wishes,
