Advanced liver cancer and heart failure

Hi all.

I've joined this forum because my 58 year old husband was diagnosed with advanced liver cancer and heart failure 4 weeks ago.

The diagnosis was very much out of the blue and even though he felt a bit 'off' and noticed a fluid build up in this feet and stomach, he was still going to work as normal until I insisted he went to our GP.

He was admitted to hospital for a week and had lots of tests before eventually being diagnosed.

The trouble is, they have said they can't treat the cancer mostly due to the heart failure and he has now been passed to palliative care.

It's been an absolute whirlwind of a time and everything has happened so incredibly fast.

Anyway, I just thought I'd introduce myself to you all.

  • Hi MadMarie,

A warm welcome to our forum - what a whirlwind of a time you have had indeed and I just wanted you to know you are not alone and I hope that I will be joined by other members in welcoming you to our friendly community. I can't believe though that your poor husband has got advanced liver cancer combined with heart failure. You must still a bit under shock as you only just found out 4 weeks ago and it has all happened so fast. You did so well to insist that he goes to see the GP as it sounds like he was pushing himself to still go to work and ignoring his symptoms.

It's so sad that they can't treat the cancer due to his heart failure and that he has now been passed on to palliative care. I do hope though that they are looking after him as well as possible and that they will be able to manage both conditions, the cancer as well as the heart failure.

I can imagine this is such a difficult time for you and if at any point you felt the need to talk to our cancer nurses, you can reach them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Looking after a loved one with cancer is not easy and it can be hard to know how to talk to them or support them in the best possible way so I wanted to share with you the information we have for family, friends and caregivers which I hope you will find an interesting read.

I will now let other members of our forum come and say hi and share their story with you.

    Best wishes,
