suspected lymphoma/breast cancer??

i’m 21, previous history of bilateral fibroadenomas which i found in 2024. these were not biopsied due to my age & instead diagnosed by ultrasound. over the years these have become increasingly painful to the point any pressure on either of my breasts gives me a flinching pain. in october i found a lump in my upper armpit that has not gone away, only increased in size. this lump is entirely painless but since september i have noticed itchiness on my neck, chest and jaw through the day that just doesn’t seem to go away, along with extreme fatigue (i cannot go a day without napping which as somebody who works two jobs is very unlike me, i sleep until my partner forcefully wakes me up, and then i can still fall asleep at night) which lead me to go to the dr at the start of february. my gp wasn’t sure if this was a fibroadenoma too or a swollen lymph node.  i was given an urgent suspected cancer referral to the breast clinic to check the new lump as well as the two previous ones & that appointment is coming up soon. has anyone gone through something similar? what should i be expecting? i’m worried they are not going to biopsy anything again and something gets missed, particularly if this is a lymph node.

  • also want to note this referral was a more urgent one compared to the referral i got when i found the original lumps so just overthinking a lot.

  • Hello Taylorswiftice,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear of your symptoms and your concerns over something being missed at your forthcoming appointment. You have done the right thing by getting re-referred to the breast clinic. Many people of your age find it difficult to be taken seriously by doctors. This is because younger people are far less likely to get breast cancer than older people, although sadly, there are no guarantees. This does mean that you may find that you have to be more assertive about how you feel and the tests that you need for reassurance. Please don't worry about being referred by the two-week urgent pathway this time. This is the more usual way to be referred and it doesn't signify anything untoward. It is a fact that only 20% of people referred to the breast clinic will get a cancer diagnosis - the other 80% have fibroadenoma, cysts, etc.

It is unusual to have pain associated with breast cancer. There are 3 main tests carried out initially at the breast clinic. These are mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy, although some people may also need CT scan or an MRI. You are unlikely to have a mammogram, because young people tend to have denser breasts, which do not show up well with this imaging. If there is anything suspicious looking on an ultrasound, you may be given a biopsy. This tests the tissue for any cancerous cells and the results usually take 1-2 weeks to come back. Has your appointment come through yet?

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi, thanks for the response. my appointment is the beginning of next week so thankfully that came in very quickly! I actually have more concerns that I have lymphoma or something to that regard just due to my age group & that the lump that is potentially a lymph node is completely painless (different to my fibroadenomas). I’ve read that they look similar on an ultrasound aswell so just hoping it isn’t overlooked due to already having fibroadenomas. thank you for your advice to advocate for myself a bit more with being so young, i will certainly try!
