Dad has stage 4 lung cancer - struggling to cope. It's all happened so fast and I'm so scared

I am struggling to cope with my dad’s diagnosis. He’s had biopsies and we are waiting to see if there is a mutation that they can treat but he’s poorly now in hospital. (He can’t have chemo so there is no treatment if there is no mutation). I just want some hope. But now he has an infection but they can’t find what it is. He’s on oral antibiotics till they know more. I’m beside myself with worry. I’m also helping to look after my mum with Alzheimer’s. Dad is her rock.
I can’t sleep and just feel total despair at the situation. It has all happened so fast and I’m so scared.

  • Hello Denver100,

Welcome to the forum and I'm sorry to hear about your dad's diagnosis. When a parent has cancer, it can bring up all sorts of emotions and worries about the future so it's important to take care of yourself and your wellbeing at this difficult time, including maintaining a routine and getting enough sleep. We have some guidance around family, carers and cancer, which I hope might be useful, and don't be afraid to lean on people close to you for support or just to talk to. It could help ease the pressure you may feel. You may also be able to find support in your area for your mum via the Alzheimer's Society website.

I can imagine it's a scary time, but please know that Cancer Chat is always here for you whenever you need it.

    Best wishes to you,
