Hi guys - diagnosed with stage 3 oesophageal cancer in December 2024. Two years later and I'm now cancer free. Stay positive everyone

Hi guys, my names Mike. I noticed in December 24 I was having trouble swallowing. Anyhow after the first test it was confirmed in Dec that year it was oesophageal cancer, got prodded and poked and scanned for 3 months.

Started my 1st of 4 FLOT chemo treatments at hospital in March. Found them very invasive but I was physically fit and mentally strong (very important). Big weight loss through constant diarrhoea, feeling cold hands and feet, worst part was not being able to able to control my reasoning, I guess it’s my nature I hate being fussed over.

Next step surgery, full oesophagectomy, at hospital, fabulous team. All went well had not joking 42 lymph nodes removed as well. Surgery was fine, but had many accidents with the trots it was incessant. Got pneumonia in intensive care it’s not uncommon, so was in hospital 12 nights.   By this time I had gone from 14 stone to 11.5. Then the next stage of flot chemo 4 visits to clean up any residual cancerous bits. That was the worst part of my journey I managed 2 but went down to 10 stone, I didn’t recognise myself. I decided no more, prof at the hospital agreed saying the treatment can be more dangerous, he also said if cancer returns it’s not because you stopped chemo. That was in September.

Next problem, don’t get too downhearted if weight didn’t improve for a while healing process burns a lot of calories.

Any how, cancer free, rang the bell at the hospital good luck to everyone, and stay positive.. ps I was stage 3.

Regards, Mike.

  • Hello Mike, and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

It sounds like you've been on quite the journey over these past 2 years ago but I'm so pleased you were able to ring the bell and you're now officially cancer free. It must have been amazing to hear those words after going through so much.

I'm sure some of our members will stop by soon to say hello, but in the meantime I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to share your story with us as it will help so many people who are new to oesophageal cancer and want to know what lies ahead.

Now, get out there and celebrate. You deserve it.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • That’s great news - long may your remission continue!

  • Hi Mike, that’s fantastic news, delighted for you, thank you for sharing.

May I ask what your Professor meant after your weight loss, when he said continuing the treatment can be more dangerous, but particularly if the cancer returns its not because you stopped chemo? Thank you.

  • Hi, Quility. I was losing so much weight after 2 bouts of post op chemotherapy, it was my choice. The prof agreed. The second lot of chemo is to hopefully clear up any microscopic cells scans can’t detect. Only 30% of patients undergo the 2nd lot of treatment, I had half of it, and decided enough was enough. Beside the weight loss your immune system is compromised any bug you pick up can be quite serious. Hope that explains things, and thanks for your heads up. Regards . Mike. Ps im 68. Feeling hell of a lot better getting stronger.
