Looli - breast cancer has spread to lympth nodes…

After results from mastectomy (10cm tumour grade 2 tumor) I’m now needing further surgery to remove more lympth nodes as ones removed in operation were cancerous.

I was originally told it hasn’t spread anywhere but now find out MRI’s are only 70% accurate.

I’m basically scared about where else it may have spread & how  they will be able to check.

Any  advice would be gratefully received, thank you.

  • Hi Looli,

I am very sorry to hear that you need further surgery. Do you know what type of breast cancer you have? The fact that MRIs are not 100% accurate is why surgeons always check the tissue removed after surgery. This ensures that no cancer is left behind, but means that a number of people have to have a second surgery. The  main types of breast scans tend to be mammogram, ultrasound, CT scan and MRI. If the cancer is not picked up by one of these, it is usually picked up by one of the other scans. If there is any doubt more in depth scans can be carried out.

Please discuss your concerns with your care team and they should be able to reassure you. They will carry out other scans throughout the course of your treatment to see that it is being effective. If it isn't, they may change the type of treatment you're getting.

I  would like to take this opportunity to wish you well on your cancer journey. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
