Good to talk (hopefully) - I decided to stop treatment after scan showed my melanoma cancer wasn't active. I'm struggling to cope with the anxiety - any ideas?

Hello

I am a 77 years old man living with Melanoma cancer. I have had two years of immunotherapy and following a PET scan that showed nothing active, I decided to stop treatment. I still have scans and have restarted dermatology checks. My problem is anxiety and how to cope with it. Hopefully some of you might have some ideas.

Regards

  • Hi

Im sorry you are struggling. I would speak to your gp to see about some therapy. If you dont want to do that, macmillan and other cancer charitys offer therapy. Also i find things like yoga, being in nature or breathing exercises all help. Xx

  • Hi there,

I can understand why you feel anxious and all the additional anxieties that jump on the bandwagon to worry you even more.

All of the "what if's". "wonder when"  "what could" & "what should" simply torture your mind as there is no seeing into the future, hence no answers except reliance on your MDTeam, Consultants & Doctors.

The 2 year period of Immunotherapy sounds positive and backed up by the negative Pet Scan.  It's fabulous that you'll continue with regular Scans and checks.  I assume this means the Immunotherapy did it's job.

You cañ see various Therapists to talk to, Cancer Speclists can answer questions and offer advice.  If you don't feel a bond with a Therapist, you can try a different one.

Bungle1 suggests similar plus a fab idea of physical exercise where you can also meet new people & socialise.

Please be guided by your MDT professionals. It appears you've survived the worst parts of diagnosis and treatment.  So now is the time to rejoice in the positive progress you've achieved.

I've suffered with anxiety for years, nothing to do with cancer.  It's a horrid and disabling emotion, your GP should point you in the right direction.  Please concentrate your thoughts on how well you've dealt with all you've been through and yet fought it to achieve excellent results.

I was diagnosed last week with Stage 3 Metastatic Melanoma.so I'm a few years away from your current position.

I wish you well,  Liz age 74 x
