Anyone else struggling with mouth problems?
Hi Jax
Ive been through this myself with radiotherapy to jaw neck throat after removal of Parotid gland and lymph nodes. It is really miserable and understand you wanting to stop treatment. The radiotherapy team should have provided you with a mouthwash to be used from day 1. The one given to me was in small plastic tubes I used 10 to 12 of these per day. Keep well hydrated drink at least pints water a day plus tea coffee if you can tolerate it. Use a soft toothbrush like the one for babies to keep teeth clean. I was also given BioXtra gel to put in my mouth it is an artificial saliva, I found this most beneficial during night. Eat soft non spicy food. rice, mashed potato, small pasta, soups, porridge, hummus, ice cream, milkshakes, bananas sometimes bananas sting the mouth a blender can help you eat cooked vegetables as a puree. I got to the point where it took an hour to eat a bowl of porridge one teaspoon at a time I was given food supplement drink to help prevent weight loss the milk based protein ones were ok but the fruit based one I found could sting. Sucking an ice cube can also bring some relief. Avoid alcohol as your sense of taste beer tastes like fizzy water, you may as well drink water. I had 20 sessions, the final week and the week after are the worst, you will gradually recover, sore mouth tongue will heal and eventually you will get most of yout taste back. You may have a dry mouth for a long time though so carry a bottle of water with you, you should ask for excercises for your jaw and neck so these dont seize up and you keep your swallowing reflex. Hope there are a few ideas to get started on. Try to finish your treatment, it gave me 10 years of extra life so far.

Hi Ed,
Thank you for your detailed reply. 20 sessions! I don't know how you managed it.
Like you said it takes a long time to eat a small bowl of food, but you have to continue using those muscles.
I've been brushing my teeth with coconut oil, it's antimicrobial too.
I'm taking a break from everything hospital and will see how it goes.
Thank you again for replying.
All the very best to you,Ed.
