Confused - lung cancer treated 2 years ago but new cancer has been found in mediastinal glands. It's squamous cancer but they can't find the primary

I am new to this site. I wonder if anyone has a similar situation. I had lung cancer 2 year ago. Caught very early and successfully resected.  On my routine scan a new cancer had been found in the mediastinal glands but its squamous and different from my original cancer. They can’t find the primary source. They want to treat as oesophageal and give me radiotherapy and chemo treatment over 5 weeks. I had hoped for surgery but they won’t do that. I know the area is close to heart so a concern for surgery. Biopsy show no cancer in the oesophagus but the side effects will cause issues there. Has anyone had this experience?

  • A very warm welcome to the forum LKav although I'm sorry to hear a new cancer has been found in your mediastinal glands just 2 years after your lung cancer diagnosis.

Finding that out and being told they were unable to locate the primary must have been very difficult to hear but I'm glad you've reached out to us as our members know how challenging it is to be in this position and hopefully some of them will be along soon to share their experiences and offer their support and advice.

It's natural to have concerns about the treatment plan that's been put in place, but if you're really worried about the possible side effects this will have on the parts of your body where no cancer has been found then don't hesitate to raise this with your medical team as they will be able to address your concerns and hopefully put your mind at ease about what they've proposed.

You can also discuss this with one of our cancer nurses on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very easy to talk to and will do all they can to support you.

Do let us know how things go and remember that we will be by your side on every step of this journey.

    Kind regards,
