Penny H - had 6 weeks of radiotherapy on my vocal cord and struggling with fatigue. How long will it last?

Hi, I'm new to this group. I had my 6 weeks of Radiotherapy last June on my vocal chord , I've lost alot of my saliva and taste which I can cope with but the fatigue........how long does that go on for ?  I don't know whether it's normal or should I see my GP ?

My thyroid also suffered badly and I'm now on thyroxine but I have regular blood tests to make sure that it's ok.

I'd be grateful if anyone has any thoughts on this

  • Hello Pennyred,

A warm welcome to Cancer Chat. I am so sorry to hear that the radiotherapy on your vocal cord has caused so many side effects and that you have lost your saliva and taste. We have detailed information on our website you might be interested in reading on radiotherapy side effects as well as on tiredness resulting from radiotherapy. I am not sure how long it tends to last but it can help to talk through any worries you have with your doctor so don't hesitate to get in touch with your medical team to ask them whether it is normal. I think it will reassure you to contact your GP and to find out whether this is to be expected.

You could also ring our cancer nurses for advice on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

I am sorry that your thyroid suffered badly from all this but it's good they are monitoring it closely with regular blood tests.

I hope that the tiredness improves and that you will hear from other members of our community who have also struggled with fatigue after radiotherapy.

    Best wishes,
