fecal calprotectin result

Hi, I am wondering if anyone could ease my mind as I am really worried.

Since the last 20 odd years I have suffered with IBS on and off. Never had a test to confirm it, just told i had it by my GP when I was in my 20's.

Anyway 2 years ago I had a FIT test done due to the gut problem which came back negative.

March this year i became constipated due to quitting smoking. I think it was where my problems started. I basically started to see large amounts of bloods in the toilet bowl. Then i started having diarhea still with lots of blood.

2 seperate doctors checked and said I had piles and tried the creams, but it only settled it for a couple of weeks and then it started again. But the toilet needs had got worse where i needed the loo at one point about 15 times in a day..

The doctor decided to get a FIT test done which came back at 30.8 (abnormal) and a fecal calprotectin has just come back normal. But I have lost weight of 8lb in 3 months. I also have had a contrast CT scan 5 weeks ago which was normal.

I have a booked telephone consultation this Friday with colonoscopy team.

I am really worried.

Thanks for reading this far.

  • Hello TiaMaria77

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some ongoing concerns with your bowel health. It's understandable you've been feeling anxious. Hopefully the colonoscopy team will be able to give you some reassurance when you speak with them today.

If there's anything you'd like to talk through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Do let us know how you get on.

  • Hi Jenn

Thank you for responding to me. I have just had the telephone consultation from a nurse from the colonoscopy team. She just asked lots of questions, and tbh i am very anxious. She said they want to book in for the colonoscopy and possibly a ct scan, even though i have just had a contrast CT Scan 6 weeks ago of my abdoman and it showed normal. I don't know what to do with myself as I am convinced it is the C word.

  • Hello TiaMaria77

I'm sorry to hear that you're still feeling so anxious after talking with the nurse from the colonoscopy team. It sounds like they're doing all they can to try to find out what is causing your symptoms.

Try to hold on to the positive news that nothing of any immediate concern was found on your CT scan 6 weeks ago.

We have some tips and advice on how to cope with waiting for news, and of course, you can call our nurses to talk things through with them as well. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that you can get some answers and reassurance soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you Jenn I am trying to hold onto that. I lost my little boy aged 7 to Neuroblastoma, so I have already lived the worse cancer journey ever.

It just would have been nice if the nurse could have tried to reassure me slightly instead of now making me feel she suspects things are not right.

  • I'm no expert but my understanding is that it could be lots of things.

The FIT result you got isn't THAT high and all that tells you anyway is that there is bleeding, which you knew. It could still he piles. Or a polyp or diverticulitis or a fissure or an infection.

I would say cancer is unlikely, given the clear CT scan and that the FIT test isn't THAT high. I could be wrong but I've heard cancer gets more likely when the results go over the 100.

And honestly, even if the nurse DOES suspect things aren't right, that doesn't necessarily mean she suspects cancer. She could have been concerned about the possibility of IBD or diverticulitis or an infection or possibly something like celiac disease.

Hope you get good news and sorry to hear about your little boy.

  • Thank you so much foe your reassurance. I have also just spoken to a lovely lady at the support line you gave me, and she said the exact same as you. I really appreciate your support. I will keep you updated. Wishing you a Happy New Year x
