Radical Nephrectomy recovery - has anyone experienced any issues with bowel movements and passing wind after surgery?

I underwent a robotic radical nephrectomy (suspected renal cancer) 3 days ago. I've been discharged today, which I'm very happy about but I'm wondering if anyone reading this, who's had similar surgery, experienced issues with bowel movement and passing wind afterwards? It's not an easy thing to discuss openly but I can feel that my tummy is full of gas, however I couldn't pass wind if you paid me at the moment and bowel movements are only possible with the aid of laxido.

I know they would have inflated my abdomen with co2 to do the surgery, but I'm worried that it hasn't dissipated yet.

Should I be concerned?

  • Hi TJ0411 and welcome to Cancer Chat.

It's great to hear you've been discharged from hospital in time for Christmas, although I'm sorry about the issues you're currently having with your bowel movements and passing wind. As you say, it can be difficult to talk about this but if you feel something isn't quite right and are concerned, then don't hesitate to reach out to your medical team for further support and advice. Hopefully it won't be any cause for concern, but it's always good to be safe in situations like these, especially after surgery.

Hopefully some of our members who have had a radical nephrectomy will share their experiences and insight with you soon, but if you'd like to have a quick chat with one of our cancer nurses about this, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday (except 24th - 26th December and New Year's Day) between 9a.m - 5p.m. They will do all they can to answer your questions and put your mind at ease about these issues.

We're sending you all our support TJ0411 and wishing you all the best with your recovery. We'll have our fingers crossed these issues start to improve soon.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
