Type 3 GOJ moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma T3N3MO

My husband was diagnosed with the above last February the plan was to have the FLOT regime and then total stomach removal.  4 rounds of chemo ending end of May then middle of a July  it was an open and closed operation as the tumour appeared to have shrunk but had also stuck down to the pancreas.  He was then on a wait and see approach.  CT scan and monitor.  By October it was evident he was have difficulty eating again and being sick from secretions.

A swallow test showed the oesophagus was narrowing so has recently had a stent fitted.  Again there hasn’t been much improvement in eating as the secretions are causing him to be sick.  We are awaiting maintenance chemo 18 weeks delivered every 3 weeks.  In this whole time my husbands weight has gone down about 4 1/2 stone.  My question is has anyone suffered with the secretion and have you got any tips advice for dealing with this, apart from the build up drinks what foods are managing.  My husband is living off noodles/pasta/soups/soft diet on a good day but is very disheartened by it all.  Thanks in advance for any ideas.

  • Hello Rosieb1866

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis and the struggles that he's been having with his diet. It sounds like it's been a really difficult time.

We have some information on our website about tips for putting on weight that you may find helpful, but I'd really encourage you to talk through your concerns with his specialist nurse or Consultant for further advice and support. It may be that they can refer him to a dietitian for advice or that there are additional treatments they can offer to help with the secretions and vomiting.

If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses, you're welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that this next round of treatment offers some relief. Keep in touch if it helps to have a safe space to put down in writing how you're feeling, ask questions or chat with others who understand. We're here for you Rosieb1866.

Sending my best wishes to you both,
