Breast cancer - oncologist wants me to start taking Abemaciclib tablets and ibandronic acid. Is anyone taking these tablets too? It's overwhelming

Hi   ,, I've completed 8 rounds of chemotherapy and 15 radiotherapy sessions ..for breast cancer . I had a mastectomy and axillary lymph node clearance ...grade 3 stage 3...My Oncologist has now said he wants me to start taking  Abemaciclib tablets for 2 years plus ibandronic acid for 3 years.  Is there anyone out there taking these tablets too.... I'm going to ask could I have an infusion instead of tablet form for the ibandronic acid tablets... I'm already coming up to being on Letrozole for 3 months .

Has anyone any advise please ..

  • Hello BeeStrong,

Well done for completing these 8 rounds of chemotherapy and 15 radiotherapy sessions for breast cancer - that is a lot to get through and I can imagine that the thought of all this additional medication is a bit overwhelming for you. It can be a bit of a daunting prospect to be given this medication to take - and to have to take it for years - when you have already been on letrozole for 3 months. But I would follow your oncologist's guidance and it would be great to also hear from the experiences of others on the forum who have taken this treatment before. There is useful information on our website on abemaciclib as well as on the possible side effects and you can also find out more about ibandronic acid - feel free to get in touch with our cancer nurses on this free number 0808 800 4040 if you would like to talk things through with them - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I will also mention a couple of posts on the forum that caught my attention from other members who have taken these tablets or who were going to start on the same treatment regime.  posted this thread on starting abemaciclib about 5 months ago and I also found this thread on ibandronic acid daily tablets by   and  also posted this thread on considering taking ibandronic acid by infusion. Those are just a few examples but if you look for the term 'Ibandronic' or 'abemaciclib' in the search bar above, you will be able to find other posts that might be relevant to you.

If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses, you're welcome to call them on their free helpline 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Best of luck with the start of these new treatments. I hope that they are beneficial.

    Best wishes,
