Lung chest and liver cancer - mum has been given 3 - 12 months with treatment. She's due to start chemo soon. Will it help with her breathing problem?

My mum has just been given her cancer prognosis. 3-12 months with treatment. I'm assuming the fact that it's spread means it is stage 4. She didn't ask. She had COPD for years and it masked the symptoms. She is struggling to breathe as the cancer is pressing on her windpipe. She believes this is her last Christmas. She starts chemo this week. Has anyone had this and will it help with her breathing problem? Until 8 weeks ago she could walk 2 miles no prob. Now she's struggling just to walk and breathe going to the loo. Anyone had similar or good stories to share?

  • Hello Dynescymraeg,

I can imagine it was a bit of a shock for her to be given this prognosis and that you have also found out that the cancer has spread. How unfortunate that the COPD masked her symptoms and it must be so upsetting for you to see her struggling to breathe as the cancer is pressing on her windpipe. It's so sad that she believes this will be her last Christmas and I hope that the chemotherapy treatment she is starting this week will help.

Hopefully you will hear from other members of our community who have had something similar and they will be happy to share their experience and stories with you. It might be worth also getting in touch with our cancer nurses on this free number 0808 800 4040 and they might be able to tell you more as to whether the treatment will help with her breathing problem. Your mum's medical team will be able to advise you further too so don't hesitate to ask them how the chemotherapy is likely to impact her.

A lot has changed in the space of just 8 weeks and it must be heart-breaking to see her unable to walk or breathe properly. I hope that the treatment will be helpful and that this breathing problem will improve.

    Best wishes,
