Asbestos concerns

Hello I think we may have been exposed to asbestos. It was a DIY project gone very wrong and I’m so worried my husband might become ill because of it. We live in a 1950s house and the outbuilding ceiling was leaking. My husband pulled down most of the ceiling without a mask and I’ve since read it could contain asbestos. The area was probably 4x6ft and from what I’ve read the mortar could have asbestos in it. It’s too late to test it now but I’m worried sick. I recently lost my mum to lung cancer so the feelings are still very raw.

i know no one can say that yes he will or no he won’t become ill but I’m thinking this is possibly a huge exposure so surely its more likely

  • Hello Beansbaked and welcome to Cancer Chat,

I understand that you would have some concerns given your experience with cancer. People who develop cancer due to asbestos exposure are often those who have worked with prolonged contact with broken asbestos (without protective clothing and equipment) over many years. It's unlikely that your husband would become ill from this one occasion, but you can find more information on asbestos and other risks of mesothelioma on our website. If you're worried that there could be asbestos in other areas of your house, the best thing to do is to speak to your surveyor or perhaps get advice from an asbestos surveyor specifically.

I hope this is helpful and gives you some reassurance,

  • Thank you very much for your kind reply. I spoke to my dr yesterday who said she thought my husbands exposure was low risk but how can it be? All my research online says he could have breathed in a huge amount of fibres which would make his risk high. No one else seems concerned about this which completely baffles me

  • I also read they used 10-20% of asbestos in this material, sometimes up to 70% around fireplaces, surely the percentage would also increase the risk.

ive spent so much time researching and being told differing views it’s difficult to be logical over this

  • Because it was the one occasion, as opposed to prolonged exposure over many years, that makes the risk much lower. When you’re worried about cancer, it can be tempting to look for answers online, but this can end up increasing anxiety rather than making you feel better and some information online can be unhelpful and inaccurate. It's encouraging that your doctor also said there is low risk.

Please try not to worry and best wishes to you,
