Post menopausal bleeding. Cheesewitch

I’m 65 and have had some , obviously, post menopausal bleeding which I know from nhs guidelines requires early attention by a gp. I saw a gp on Wednesday but she said she couldn’t examine me until the bleeding stopped! It is very light, pink, and usually only occurs in the morning and I wasn’t bleeding at the time of the appointment but she just kept repeating “ come back when the bleeding stops “. I’m worried,

partly because we have travel plans in December and I wa trying to do the right thing by addressing this promptly. I’m still having some bleeding, still light after nearly a week. What do I do?

  • Please book in and see a different GP, they should have referred you to see a gynaecologist.

That is very poor practice, suppose you were bleeding for months.

Demand a referral, post menopausal bleeding needs investigation.

  • Thanks for your reply Clastegra. Unfortunately it is a very poor practice and as far as I’m aware has no permanent gps and the one I saw is the only female. I will call on Monday and hopefully get some result. I just can’t believe that people are being fobbed off like this especially by another woman! Hopefully it’s nothing but the unknown is really worrying and my poor husband must be fed up of me going on about it and not being able to concentrate on anything else.

  • Hello just to let you know I had post menopausal bleeding 5 years ago and it was an instant 2 week referral without examination. It turned out to be atrophic vaginitis brought on by stress. Agree with the other comment demand a 2 week referral. Hugs x.

  • I’ve just been to the GP today for the exact same thing and they referred me for an urgent ultrasound and blood tests. I’m only 42 but have been through early menopause and haven’t had a period for 2 years. You definitely need to go back and see another doctor.

  • Only spotted this after my other reply to your original post. Did you speak to the GP today?

  • Spoke to the practice manager who arranged an appointment with another gp at another affiliated practice as our practice only has one female. She was very nice and listened to my concerns. My appointment is on Wednesday and I imagine the gp will refer me. I just wish it had been done last week as my husband and I are due to fly out on holiday on 13th until after Christmas. Have never been away for Christmas before but decided to go after a difficult time. I don’t want to have to cancel . Thank you for your replies and good luck with your appointments. Wishing you well. Take care.

  • Hopefully it will happen quickly. We’re due to go away for Christmas on the 20th Dec and like you, really don’t want to have to cancel for tests. Hopefully things will move swiftly for us both and it will be something minor and we can then enjoy our Christmas break!

  • Spoke to the practice manager who has arranged an appointment for tomorrow with a different gp at another practice. I’ve made it clear that I want a referral and she was very helpful and and undertanding so I expect that the gp will do the referral tomorrow. I just wish it hadn’t been so difficult and stressful to get to this point especially as we have a holiday booked for over Christmas. I s hoping that I would have had some tests done so that I could relax a bit. Fingers crossed  .
thanks to all for your replies and advice and I hope all goes well for you.
