Undergoing investigation for suspected ovarian cancer

Hi,

I am new to the forum. I am 51 with a 12yo son, a lovely partner and also a beautiful labrador that won't leave my side as he knows Mum is poorly.

I have had blood tests/ ultrasound  for suspected ovarian cancer. I see a specialist next week for diagnosis. My symptoms are many but the worst is currently fluid retention in my abdomen. I'm booked in to have it drained in a few days, this cannot come soon enough. I have been referred for a CT scan too as the ultrasound wasn't clear due to the fluid build up. The scan did show a mass that needs addressing.

My head is spiralling and the unknown future is terrifying. I'm reaching out to see if anybody has any wise words for this limbo time I find myself in?

I feel like I have a huge ticking bomb inside me.

thanks

  • Hello Peanut246

I'm sorry to hear about all that you've been going through recently. Hopefully, having the fluid drained will bring you some physical comfort whilst you wait for the CT scan and the next steps regarding a treatment plan.

It's understandable that you're feeling overwhelmed by things and that you're concerned about what will happen. I know that for many people this period of waiting for additional tests and results can be difficult and it's natural to have lots of questions, concerns and even fears. It can often help to talk with someone about those things and how you're feeling. It might be useful to chat things through with one of our nurses, who I know will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. If you'd like to chat with them, they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040. You might also like to have a look at this thread about waiting for news, which has some tips and advice that might help you cope.

Keep in touch Peanut246 and let us know how you're getting on. We're here for you.

    Sending my best wishes,

  • Thank you for your response and advice. It feels like such a lonely and long time waiting to find out exactly what is going on.

The ascites are so uncomfortable, I cannot sit up now, my tummy looks like a full term pregnancy and its happened so quickly over the last week or so.

I'm off to see my GP today so hope I get some support there. Since this started I have not seen my GP. I was originally examined by an out of hours iGP in a different practice, I have had phone calls with my GP and been seen at hospital. I have felt unseen by my GP... but a call to 111 when I reached breaking point in the early hours of today has meant they have finally given me a face- to- face appointment  I know the NHS is under pressure but why do I feel like an inconvenience to them?

    Thanks for being there.

  • I really like the quote about courage, how true.

by the way, Grandson plus his girlfriend visited, didn’t want any cake !  Looks like my husband is going to have some extra!

    regards x

  •  I like so much

All we can do is support each other in life and face every day as it comes.

Courage is not having the strength to carry on but carrying on when you have no strength.

  • Oh dear! Well you made the effort and the cake will surely not go to waste!

  • Just to say that I am thinking of you and am pleased to see others' posts from people able to empathise.

  • Thank you Mary.

I just had the news that I am going home today as everything has settled. So hopefully I can enjoy my week before chemo cycle2 starts next Monday!

They are adjusting all my dosing to prevent the dip I experienced for future cycles.

I am so happy to be heading back to my own bed! !

  • Morning Peanut,

  • Hi

  • Have you had operation or are you having chemo first? I was diagnosed stage 3b had my operation first followed by chem and it was tough, but i got through it,stay stong and positivex

  • Thanks for that info...I am due to have op after 3rd cycle so I am at the beginning of this really.

I am dreading what post op recovery will be like as it all sounds extreme. I know I will feel different when the growths are removed but not ecstatic about time in intensive care that I have been told to expect.

Not sure what post op chemo will be like, at the moment I am still very much one day at a time but curious about how it will all play out for me.

When do Dr's start talking about personal prognosis as opposed to general statistics?

  • Honestly i was scared aswell, they said i would be in intensive care for 3days but had to stay there for 7days as my operation took 10hr due to complications,my recovery was tough as i needed to be fit enogh for chem, always here if you need a chatx

  • I will outline my journey for you.
I started my first course of chemo in October 2024, 6 sessions.i was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian with metastatic spread. I was in a very poor physical state, had lost a lot of weight but looked very bloated, Ascites.  I was given all info., to make an informed decision. I declined surgery ,and the surgeon understood this due to my weak state.
after the course of chemo I did have stabilisation and was regaining weight, strength and mobility.   I then had RUCAPARIB prescribed as an ongoing treatment.  Due to a tooth extraction I came off tablets as advised.   After CT scan it was noted I had a few extra ‘spots’, so more chemo advised.  I am now just post 5th session, with 1 more to come. Then CT scan with a look at the way forward.

It has been gruelling of course, with many side effects, but I believe I’m in a much better place, feel more able to be positive. Trying to increase my stamina little by little.

At times I’ve felt flat in mood, with strange feelings., but it usually all improving, so I go forward with hope and trust.

    regards Rose-w
