Hi. I'm Asti - sole carer for my Mum with incurable lung cancer

Hello? I have just joined. I am the sole carer of my 85 year old Mum. Mum has lung cancer. This was discovered back in March after she had a silly fall, cracked the top of her femur and ended up in A&E. It was mutually agreed that ue to her age and already being frail (she is only a little dot- 4ft 9!) It was agreed that the best course of action was to let nature be nature and no treatment. The two options were 1) lots of invasive tests, probing and then treatment that would make her very ill almost instantly- basically ending her good quality of life there and then, and by the time she recoverd from the treatment - if sucessful - she would be nearly 90! or 2) let it be- make the most of life now while she can (well once leg had healed enough!) and when the time comes to be managed with palative care.  This is the option we chose, It was also the prefered option of the doctors case conference.  Eight months on we still think we made the right choice- I may have a salad drawer full of enough "anticipatory drugs" to bring down a cart horse but  hey! we have our next little trip all booked and coming uo very soon :)

OK so thats the positive side. I will leave the less positive for future posts, I hope I have found that safe space where I can vent, maybe get upset and ask "silly questions" :)

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Astidog although I'm sorry to hear about your mum.

Deciding not to have treatment must have been very difficult but given your mum's circumstances and the doctors advice it sounds like the right decision was made, especially as it's given you the chance to make some wonderful memories together.

I'm sure some of our members will introduce themselves to you soon but if you have any questions about what's to come or worries about your role as a carer, you can give our cancer nurses a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all that they can to help.

Being a carer can be very rewarding, but it must be very tough doing this by yourself so please make sure you take advantage of the support that is available at home to you and your mum and remember to take care of yourself as well.

We're thinking of you Astidog and hope you have a wonderful time on your next trip away.

    Best wishes to you both,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
