Lung lesions

I went to A&E recently with suspected heart problems. That was all clear but a chest X-ray gave an incidental finding of two small areas of concern. A CT scan has identified two lesions, one 10mm by 11mm in the lower lung and one in the upper lung which is possibly inflammation. I saw a doctor today and as the results are inconclusive I need a PET scan. I am really worried and can’t stop myself looking up stuff on google. My other symptoms, chest tightness and some shortness of breath (although minor) are not thought to be related, I m however asthmatic. The nurse talked about asbestos and passive smoking (I am a non smoker) and I am so worried and now have to wait for two weeks for the next scan. I realise I’d have no diagnosis but this is not helping. My job is working with cancer patients and all I can think of is how many incidental findings have resulted in a cancer diagnosis. I really can’t relax and now have pains in my neck and imagining all sorts of symptoms

  • Hello Daisysmum

I'm sorry to hear that a recent X-ray you had identified some areas that need further investigation. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about things.

We know that for many people, this period of waiting and uncertainty can be really difficult. Many people turn to the internet looking for answers, and unfortunately, what happens most often is that they don't find the answers and reassurance they are looking for. Instead, they're left feeling more worried and with more questions. If you can avoid trying to search online for answers, this might help you feel less anxious while you're waiting for news.

It's not uncommon to feel other aches, pains and symptoms whilst you're going through this process. Stress can take a toll on the body, and it's easy to imagine new problems are because of a worst-case scenario. I wonder if you might find it helpfu lto talk things through with one of our nurses whilst you're waiting for your next appointment. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. If you'd like to talk with them, they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep posting here in the Cancer Chat community if it helps to have a safe space to put down in writing how you're feeling, ask questions or chat with others who understand. We're here for you.

Let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you. You are right, the more I look into things the more I imagine what might be wrong. It doesn’t help that in my job I see this all the time. The incidental findings that lead to a cancer diagnosis however we of course only see those where this is the case not the many others where there is nothing to worry about.  A little knowledge is sometimes a dangerous thing. I have tried to be more relaxed and try and keep occupied but it’s the nights that ate the worst lying there thinking that the doctor must have recommended a PET scan because he is suspicious there is something more going on rather than they are checking that there isn’t. I just how I get answers soon as the waiting, as you say, is the worst. I have an appointment on Thursday at the respiratory clinic to do some tests into the chest tightness as the doctor feels this is a different scenario. On the plus side I cycled five miles today as I haven’t cycled for nearly three weeks. Partly because of the weather but also because I was worried I would get halfway back and be short of breath. As it turns out I wasn’t breathless once today and really enjoyed the ride. I certainly don’t feel SOB so will just carry on until I have more clarity.
