Jonesthedrain - possible kidney cancer diagnosis

Earlier this year I had some tests in the urology department of our local hospital. I have been getting up frequently at night to urinate which I put down to age. I was diagnosed with epilepsy 3 years ago so I attribute my partial loss to that and maybe age as well

I had a ct scan a few weeks back following a lower eGFR than normal range. The scan  showed a 25mm lesion/tumour in my right kidney  my eGFR has been reducing for some time The consultant assured me that if it is cancer they are slow growing! Likely to be cancerous in 70% of cases

I have noticed a slow reduction in weight. I have slight anaemia - a reduction in haemaglobin. It seems to me that my next CT scan in a few weeks time will confirm kidney cancer and maybe its rate of growth. I’m 79 1/2 & reluctantly planning my 80th birthday party!

  • Hi Jonesthedrain,

That is one big birthday coming up for you! So you deserve an incredible birthday party.  I am sorry though you have had these slight health worries recently. But it's good that you had these scans to try and find out exactly what is going on. It is reassuring what the consultant said, that if it is kidney cancer it is very slow growing and the important thing really is to get a definite diagnosis so that you can be closely monitored if it turned out to be cancer.

Keeping everything crossed for you for your next CT scan in a few weeks' time - I hope that you will get some answers then and that you will find out whether it is definitely kidney cancer and if it is what the rate of growth might be. Should you have any questions after you get the results of your scan or before, we have a free helpline you can ring on 0808 800 4040 and talk to our cancer nurses Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm so don't hesitate to give them a call at any time.

Other members of our community have previously embarked on a similar diagnostics journey and I hope that they will pop by and share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
