Urgent Suspected Cancer Referral for Cervical Cancer

Week before last I saw my GP to put my mind at rest about my symptoms. Unfortunately the opposite happened and she did an urgent referral. The word cancer was never mentioned, she just said urgent referral to gynaecologist. Then I looked at the info on my NHS app and see Urgent Suspected Cancer Referral.
My hospital appointment is tomorrow. Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect in my first appointment? I’ve read about various tests starting with colposcopy which I assume will happen. Can they tell at the time if it’s cancer? How soon after will any other tests happen? I’m very worried and having some info may help

  • Hello Nymphadora86 and welcome to Cancer Chat,

Apologies for the delay in responding to your post, but I hope your appointment went ok yesterday and that your questions were addressed. It is normal to worry when you are urgently referred. However, more than 9 out of 10 people (more than 90% of people) who have an urgent suspected cancer referral will not be diagnosed with cancer. You can read more guidance on urgent referrals on our website. I hope that everything went well and that you receive some reassurance soon. If you have further questions please don't hesitate to come back to Cancer Chat at any time

    All the best,

    Moderator Anastasia
