Hello!! Diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer last week and given a year to live

Hi I'm a 45 year old woman with COPD, Emphysema, Heart Failure and diagnosed just last week with Stage 4 Lung Cancer and given 1 year to live!! Because I have quite severe COPD and Emphysema, the Dr's have said they are unwilling to even do a biopsy as too risky apparently......or I was going to be able to start some sort of very mild chemotherapy but they said no to that too.......I've got a nodule on each lung, the biggest is 26mm and a few smaller ones. The Dr said I've got maximum 1 year so I am presuming it could be a lot less depending on how quickly the Cancer spreads......They only found the cancer as doing a CT scan for my COPD. I have no symptoms for cancer and having just been the main carer for my 91 year old grandmother who passed away nearly a year ago from breat cancer, I think I know what to look out for. Sorry for rambling on and on xx

  • Hello Nicp007

I'm so sorry to hear that after a recent routine CT scan, you've now been told that you have stage 4 lung cancer. It sounds like this has come as a shock, and it's understandable that you might have questions and concerns about things.

We have a number of members here in the Cancer Chat community who are living with a stage 4 incurable diagnosis, and hopefully some of them will post to say Hello and share their words of advice and support with you.

In the meantime, if you would like to chat with one of our nurses, you're welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any information and help they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

If you've been given details for a specialist cancer nurse, then don't be afraid to contact them and ask any questions that you have. You can also find out what support might be available in your local area. There may be an organisation such as Maggie's that you can visit or, alternatively, Penny Brohn offers a range of online groups and services that you might want to explore.

Keep posting here in the Cancer Chat forum if it helps to have a safe space to put down in writing how you're feeling, ask any questions or simply chat with others who understand. We're here for you Nic.

    Sending our best wishes,
    Jenn
