Skin cancer - feeling let down after having to wait 112 days to have my squamous cell carcinoma removed. I have my first call with the Cancer Clinic today

Referred by my doctor to the local hospital  and seen within 6 days for a tiny spot on my arm I was told surgery was necessary to remove it but not expected to be cancer but a KA. The waiting list should be 6 weeks . I was not called or contacted in that six weeks and after 23 unanswered phone calls and 4 emails during the months that followed  begging for answers  my tumour now   5 times the initial size was removed ,   exactly 112 days after my initial appointment . This week,   I received the diagnosis by phone of squamous cell carcinoma , I am taking my first call from the Cancer Clinic this morning . The surgeon informed  me he had been  requested to ‘fit me in’ and that my persistence had  paid off. I have yet to find out why my surgery was delayed and  not  performed within the 62 days. Feeling let down but I have faith things will get better.

  • Hi Guiem

Sorry to see you have been diagnosed with SCC lesion. The waiting time you experienced is about average. There is such a huge number of people presenting with these skin cancers, me included,  that the NHS is overwhelmed and cannot meet the set targets. There is just one operator manning the phone at our dermatology department, if you and 400 other patients call 23 times thats over 8000 calls to deal with. An impossible task. So have a bit of sympathy for them, they do their utmost to help everyone. Now you are in the system you will find your care and treatment excellent. Take good care of your skin to prevent further lesions.
