Stage 1 breast cancer - just been diagnosed and it's finally hit me. Finding it hard to keep this to myself but don't want to worry my family

Hello I have just been diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer on my right breast after a routine mammogram. It was a big shock as always thought I was healthy, I walk a lot and on my feet all day in my job. I am not overweight but have put on weight around my waist, usually middle age spread. I went through menopause about 10 years ago and apparently my tumor is estrogen fed which comes from menopause and added weight.

I am currently having further tests on my left breast as unusual cells came up on a MRI. Since my diagnosis I have been holding it together and carrying on as normal, but today I came home after a walk and was soaked from the rain and just burst into tears. I am finding this hard to keep to myself but don't want to worry my family so dismissing it.

Has anyone else felt this way? I assume this is normal as the shock has finally hit me.

  • Evening Wiganfc, sorry I haven't been on for a while. I have had a meeting with the surgeon doing my mastectomy and also the surgeon doing my restructure. I have a few more appointments coming up to prepare me for surgery,  which I believe will be at the beginning of January.

Have you had your scan results? Do you have a treatment plan in place?

  • Hi Cherry. I am having a lumpectomy and node removal on the 25th November. I have appointments over the next 2 weeks to prepare me for the operation. It still feels very unreal to me so I don’t know when reality will hit. Will need radiotherapy after  but have no dates for this. My consultant warned me that I may need more surgery dependant on biopsy on the nodes etc. Sorry that you have to wait until January. Are you coping ok? Lovely to hear from you. Take care.

  • Hi Pam,

I am so pleased for you it sounds like they have everything under control. I totally understand what you mean about it feeling unreal. I have not really had time to think about what is actually going on, it all seems so sireal and like you not sure when this will hit me.

The reason my op is not taking place until new year is because I am having a restructure the same time as the double mastectomy so 2 surgeons involved. They have to find a day when they are both avaliable. Also I have my sons wedding on the 19th November. The first date they gave me was the 16th December, but I wouldn't have anyone to look after me when discharged as my son would still be on honeymoon so have delayed until the new year.

I'm coping OK thanks how about you? I'm sure you just want this all over with.

  • Hi Cherry. A wedding to look forward to how lovely. Have you chosen your outfit. I think I may still be in denial which may not be a bad thing but maybe not good long term. Two appointments this week for pre op and magseed insertion.
Not long to go before the wedding. Hope you have a wonderful day.

  • Hi Pam, hope you are OK after your pre assessment. Just wanted to wish you the very best for your lumpectomy on Tuesday. When you feel up to it let me know how it went.

I will be thinking of you

  • Hi Pam, the wedding was lovely, I had an amazing time and they looked so happy.

It's my birthday today and my daughter treated me to go and see The Lion King in London, it was such a surprise and the show was fantastic.

I understand how you feel about feeling nervous. All the time you can be practical about things going to tests and just carrying with your normal every day life it doesn't feel real.

You will be fine on Tuesday, take each day as it comes. I assume your family now know and are supporting you?

Take care and rest after your op, let me know how you get on.

  • You will never guess what happened today. I got booked in etc etc. First on the list. Seen by my surgeon but then the anaesthetist wasn’t happy about my enlarged thyroid. She spoke to her colleagues and it was decided that it wasn’t safe to continue until they had further information. I need to have a ct scan and endoscopy. I am so upset and frustrated so will need to await another surgery  date and hope the appointments come through soon.
Have you had a date yet for your op? X

  • Oh Pam I'm so sorry. I thought they had already investigated your thyroid and decided it was OK?

That must be so horrible to build yourself up for the op only to have it cancelled like that. I'm sure you will be seen quickly as the cancer path deadlines that have to be met. Please don't worry I'm sure all will be fine and if it isn't then we can support each other. My op is on Tuesday 13th January.

Take care and keep me posted

  • Hi Cherry. I had my scan on throat, neck and chest so will be on the phone tomorrow to find out what they are planning. At least you will be able to enjoy Christmas and new year before your op. I very much appreciate your support. X

  • Hi Pam, sorry I haven't replied before now I have been in bed since Wednesday with an awful sickness bug.

Did you phone hospital and see what they have decided going forward?

Yes my op being in January is because my first date was 16th December and my son is on honeymoon and my daughter is being treated to a surprise trip away. Therefore, I wouldn't have anyone at home when I came out of hospital, the 13th January was the next available day.

Hope you are OK and they have given you a date now for your op
