PSA reading of 9.37 - how worried should I be?

Hi. I have  had a PSA reading of 9.37 and have been referred for an MRI. What is happening and how worried should I be?

  • Hi   In raised PSA terms 9 is quite low but does require further investigation. Mine was twice that, others are in the hundreds, sometimes even higher. The MRI will tell your urologist whether it needs looking into further, it could also be raised for reasons other than cancer. Waiting for results from scans and tests can be quite a worrying time, unfortunately that can’t be avoided and we all go through those periods. I found having results and knowing the next stage in the plan helped enormously. After your MRI, if they think it could be cancer, they will usually decide a biopsy is required. That will stage any cancer present and will decide the next step. The good news is that your raised PSA has been found early and you are in good hands with investigation work starting now, rather than a few years down the line. The MacMillan Cancer Support site has a forum dedicated to prostate cancer, you could do some more research there if you wish. The general consensus is to avoid using Google…!
