- Hi, I was diagnosed with an SCC of anal canal in Nov '24 and had a sigmoid loop colostomy in Dec followed by 28 sessions of chemoradiotherapy. At follow-up, the tumour had shrunk significantly but cancer remained. Hence, I underwent ELAPE and posterior vaginectomy with end colostomy (also hernia repair) on 2 Sept. It was a 9 hour op followed by 4 nights on critical care before transfer to ward for a further 10 nights. I had to side lie for 3 weeks before I could try sitting. On a positive note, I already had my stoma, so was confident with changing my bag. Also, I've had confirmation that they have got rid of my tumour, I am cancer free!
- What I'm struggling with a little is my new anatomy. My scars are healing well but feel tight. There is numbness in my buttocks and still have vaginal discharge. The repair of the perineal defect feels bulky. I haven't really looked or touched it yet. Any other ladies out there who have had this procedure. I guess I'm just looking for a bit of reassurance that, once fully healed, I will get back to normal, albeit with a slightly different bottom! I'm 3 weeks, 4 days post-op, so I'm not sure if I'm being too harsh on myself. I have more positive days than negative, my appetite is back, and I go out for a couple of short walks every day.
