MDS what is it?

Hi I’m Diane and I’ve just been diagnosed with Leaukemia. I’m so shocked and frightened but can’t let my family know I’m soo worried. I’ve lived a full and great life, but, not quite ready to die yet, but I have to prepare myself. I have been suffering from breathlessness and aches and pains for a few years now. My blood result have plummeted in the past year or so. I already have Liver Cirrhosis which I got from Hep C and a blood transfusion in 1973. I have been successfully fighting that and keeping at bay for years. I don’t smoke or touch alcohol at all and haven’t done for at least 20 years and I I think that helped,  but now this. I don’t know what else to say!

  • Hello Diane and a very big welcome to Cancer Chat,

I am so sorry to hear that you have just been diagnosed with leukaemia and you will also find on our website detailed information on MDS (myelodysplastic syndromes). I can imagine it all came as a bit of a shock for you and you are simultaneously having to deal with liver cirrhosis and having to keep all this at bay. It's a lot to have to deal with and I just wanted you to know that you are not alone on Cancer Chat and many members on here are in a similar position as you having been diagnosed with cancer but also having to monitor other conditions.

It can be a lot to take in after a new diagnosis and I just wanted you to know that our nurses are available on this free number 0808 800 4040 if you have any question - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I thought I would also mention another member who was diagnosed with leukaemia in recent months  - have a look at their thread on their leukaemia diagnosis and feel free to reply if you wish to do so. This is just an example amongst many and if you type the keyword 'leukaemia' in our forum search which is located at the top of the site, you will be able to see all past threads on the subject.

Have they told you more about what your treatment options might be? Keep strong Diane and we are all here for you anytime you need to talk.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator
