Oesophagus cancer ?? Would the doctor be able to tell it's cancer before the biopsy results have come through?

Hi

2 years ago I had cervical cancer had the treatment chemo radiotherapy brachytherapy got the all clear

For the past say year ive been suffering with acid reflux and painful when eating.  I have had a few cameras down my throat got told I had hiatus hernia and barretts esophagus.  I had a camera in March everything was fine.

Recently food has been getting stuck in my throat and its been really painful to eat I went for a camera yesterday. The doctor was really taking along time and they were taking a lot of biopsy.

When he had finished he came over to me told me that he had found 2 parts that he really thought were cancer ive had a ct scan today.

What I want to know would he be able to tell it was cancer before he had even got the biopsy results.

He was saying sorry to give you the bad news all the other staff were saying sorry.

I'm not worried because I know what chemo and radiotherapy is like its not the unknown. I beat it once I can beat it again.

Its the waiting or would the doctor just know.

Sorry for the long post. Please help tell me if a doctor would be able to tell or not.

  • I have oesophagus cancer diagnosed last year in May, following choking problems. I would think an experienced doctor would recognise cancer but the biopsy would confirm result. First time I had an endoscopy I could see for myself on the screen there was an area that appeared alien to the rest of the main area. I was told it was cancer at a follow up appt  and inoperable due to proximity to my left lung. Have had a bronchoscopy as well. Had radiotherapy for 4 weeks last year  and now having one further week. I am under palliative care.

Have had a stent fitted to enable swallow, but now need a further one as tumour has grown above first   stent.

Eating is still a chore and have lost 3 stone.

Trying to keep positive and seeing friends whenever possible. I dont have any close family.

    Hope this helps from Linda-B

    • Hi. My partner had endoscopy on Thursday he was told that they were 90% sure it was cancer and biopsy has been sent to the lab. He had a CT Sunday, which they have results from that but not biopsy yet. I agree the waiting is so hard.

  • I hope for your sake the doctor is mistaken, but, surely he wouldn't say that to you if he wasn't sure, Im guessing the results will just confirm his suspicions, but, I don't know. Hope you soon get the results and they are good.
