Coping with disfigurement

I had Cancer removed from my face 3 months ago and currently receiving radiotherapy on the area. 25 down 8 to go, doing really well so far, but worried about the permanent disfigurement, I am not vein by any means, but people stare and comment, which is dis heartening sometimes.

  • Hi Chris

I have empathy for your plight of being treated for cancer and suffering disfiguring scarring.

I also have several disfiguring scars to my face and scalp from surgery and skin grafts. I notice that people do stare, possibly unconciously. It is not a nice feeling.

I hide the scars on my head as I always wear a hat but cannot hide those on may face ear and back of head.

There is a charity called changing faces

worth a look. Threre is a long wait for an appointment though if you want more than just info. One thing that does help and was recommended by a member of this forum, is to take pride in your appearance by being nicely dressed, neat hair, polished shoes etc. Im naturally a scruffy unkempt outdoor person but have endevoured to be smart. For some reason it deflects stares and increases your confidence in public. I hope your final 8 sessions go well I know these are the hardest and the the following week when you end them.

What you say makes sense, and will take it on board, will give my partner an excuse to spend my money on a clothing upgrade, also I will look into the charity you mentioned
