Newbie - been diagnosed with lung cancer. Will find out more on Thursday. Still in shock and worried about my husband. He has dementia and is in a care home

just diagnosed with lung cancer, dont know type or stage yet, may find out on Thursday. Still in shock I-think cos I don’t seem to have any reaction to it, no tears, no why me, just oh well. I presume it will hit me at some point, I haven’t kept it secret so people around me know. Just don’t know what to expect next. Female age 71, husband has late stage Dementia and now is in a Care home. More worried about him and who will watch out for him if I can’t. Xx

  • A warm welcome to Cancer Chat, Jools71.

Thank you for sharing what you’re going through.

Hearing the word “cancer” can feel very surreal, and many people describe feeling a bit numb at first. There’s no right or wrong way to react and it may take time for it all to sink in.

I can hear how much you’re carrying, especially with your husband being in a care home with late-stage dementia. If you ever feel unsure about who can help support him if you become less available, your care team or local adult social services might be able to guide you.

You mentioned that you’re still waiting to find out more about the type and stage of the lung cancer. When you’re ready, our website has a page with information about lung cancer which might help give you a better idea of what to expect next. But for now, just taking things one step at a time is perfectly okay.

Also, if at any point you feel like talking things through with someone, our nurses are here to help. You can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

You’re not alone in this and we’re here whenever you feel ready to talk.

    All the best,
