Hi
I'm a 57 year old active male, back in May while on a motorbike tour of Scotland I suddenly became affected by double vision.
I continued on the trip with my friends (I'm a Yorshireman and the though of losing my trip money far outweighed any danger of riding with 1 eye shut)
When I returned home I visited my Optician seeking advise, they were very good and urgently referred me to our local eye Hospital.
Long story short, due to the vision getting worse I was admitted to Hospital for a week and had various scans /tests.
I was told that a tumour was present in my Sinus Cavity and biopsies were taken under a local and I was sent home with painkillers and oral Morphine for the headaches.
3 weeks later we found out that the biopsy results were inconclusive and deeper samples needed to be taken under a general anaesthetic.
Results were obtained and I was called in on 30th July by my Consultant to be informed that it was malignant but the biopsies had been sent to Leeds Oncology for further study as my local team hadn't seen it before and were struggling to identify exactly what it was.
Called back in today to be told it was a High Grade (aggressive ) Sarcoma that had been eroding the bone around the main mass.
Over the next 4-6 weeks I have been told to expect more tests and scans ending with 'major surgery ' in about a month.
I have to have my cheekbone removed and rebuilt using bone from my leg and 3d printed metal structures, there is also a possibility of my pallet having to be removed and rebuilt the same way, the 3rd thing came as the biggest shock....I may have to lose my right eye during the surgery as it has also been affecting the eye socket (double vision as the eyeball was pushed by the tumour) , even if they can save the eye during surgery they also informed me that the following Radiotherapy also has a high chance of blinding mye in that eye resulting in further surgery to remove it. The though of this fills me with the most dread, as mentioned I ride a motorbike , this is my passion and have planned many trips both at home and abroad !
To say I am numb and can't honestly answer my wife and families questions on how I'm doing is an understatement.
I count my Lucky stars that I got the double vision as I would have probably kept popping Paracetamol for the headaches until it became too late.
This is my story so far, not one I want to write down but the one I have and have to deal with.
