Terrified I have cancer

This is my first post. In March mum died of renal cancer at 80. We found out two weeks before she died. I’ve experienced a painful abdomen and diarrhoea for about 12 months. It could be a change in medication as I’m on a few. I’ve just had a full blood count done and a FIT stool check. The bloods have shown a low serum ferrin at 50. I have a discussion with GP on 20th Aug. I just want to know what sort of questions I should be asking considering my mums diagnosis. I’m terrified I have cancer and need to know. Thanks for listening.

  • Welcome to our forum, Mattsmum65.
I’m sorry to hear how shaken you’ve been since losing your mum to renal cancer. That happened so recently, and knowing she had her diagnosis only a few weeks before she passed must weigh heavily on your mind. Having lived with persistent abdominal discomfort and diarrhoea for around twelve months, it’s perfectly natural you’d feel terrified and longing for answers.
When you speak to your GP on 20th August, it might help to ask questions such as: what do you think is the most likely cause of my symptoms at the moment? Should we consider further investigations like endoscopy, colonoscopy, or scans? Could any of my medications be causing these symptoms? And if no clear cause is found straightaway, what would be the plan for follow-up - repeat blood tests, referrals, or monitoring symptoms?
Collecting a list of your symptoms, medications, and any patterns you have noticed can really help make your discussion with the GP more focused and effective.
Feeling terrified is understandable given everything you’ve been through. Please remember you don’t have to face this alone. If at any time you feel talking with someone medically trained would help, our nurses are here for you on 08088004040, Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm.
You have shown real courage in seeking clarity, sharing your story, and taking steps to find the answers you need. We’re here to listen should you feel the need to talk again.
