Cancer, paranoia or something else?

Hello all!

(Yep just recently posted a comment on  Extremely worried about bowel cancer  I'm just waiting now really on the outcome of the polyp examination).

I'm really writing here because I need to ask a question but about something else I've just noticed. After going through the process of "clearing my bowels out" with plenvu (horrible - was up all night going back and fourth to the toilet and got no sleep) and the next day having a colonoscopy I felt pretty tired as a result! So (this morning) I decided to get up just a little later than normal especially as I have some time off work. That also ment I urinated later I think it was around 9 or 10AM by that time, not sure.

However apon urinating I found that my urine had become a darker colour (either dark yellow/orange/brown) I really could not tell exactly it was hard to see. At one point I even thought I could see a red colour (blood?) in the urine but again I can't say exactly - I wish I had taken a photo with my phone but didn't. I also noticed that after urinating I had a slight unfomtable/burning sensation after doing so which seemed to peak after a few hours but then died down. It was very hard to determine if there really was any red in there or not I thought there was but can't be sure.

I've noticed this same symptom before though I forget exactly when (sometime fairly recent) btw. But since I really couldn't tell if I was actually seeing a red colour in the urine am I just - for want of a better term "seeing things" and putting 2 and 2 to try to make five or could this be a sign of some sort of cancer (blood in urine)? Trouble is if I look up the symptoms online I sort of do - sort of don't quite match - for example I do sometimes have lower back pain (not super painful btw) which is another symptom of bladder or prehaps prostate cancer. But then lower pack pain can be caused by any number of things.

One thing I did think it might have been is a UTI (urinary tract infection) and I could I guess have picked that up in some way from the hospital toilet but surely a UTI would last for a longer time?

I feel a bit reluctant to contact anyone right now espeically as I've literally just had a colonoscopy and also have been worried about the doctor finding cancer after having the colonoscopty. Is this just a case of simple paranoia or could it be a sign of cancer?

  • Hey ljones,

I hope your symptoms have improved since you made this post, but if they haven't, or got worse, then do make sure you get in touch with the colonoscopy department to get some advice.

You can find out more about the possible side effects that can occur after having a colonoscopy on our website but if you'd like to have a quick chat with one of our cancer nurses about this, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very easy to talk to and will do all they can to address your concerns and put your mind at ease.

Hopefully some of our members who have experienced similar issues after having a colonoscopy will share their experiences and advice with you soon as well.

We're thinking of you ljones and hope your colonoscopy results bring good news when they come through.

    Kind regards,

  • Intresting, thanks for the information there. Right now I'm just keeping an eye on things -- I'm finding it hard to determine if there is blood in my urine right now. Using a phone to take a picture while in the bathroom dosen't always work and even looking on a PC screen it can be hard to see - lights in your room while looking at a screen can make things look different.

I have tried the idea of taking a picture with my phone, copying it to my PC and then using a paint program with a colour picker tool to see if there is a blood-like colour in the urine. So far it has either come out brownish or something similar - it just isn't too easy to determine one way or another.

I have now seen my GP and they requested not one but two urine samples which I've now both done; both came back negative. The doctor used some sort of "dip test" to check one of the samples (I don't know how the other one was done). I'm concerned because I read that cancer in that part of the body can cause bleeding but not all the time. The doctor I spoke to said I might have "health anxiety" but I must admit although I can accept some of that I did feel as if I had been "blown off" by just a little bit (the doctor also briefly mentioned costs to the nhs and soforth).

I must admit I'm not sure what to do now - I feel like I've been left in limbo. I have two negative urine tests but yet anything serious might not just show up with such a simple test (or would it) and may or may not be able to see blood in my urine. Not sure what to do.
