Feeling ???? The lumpectomy I've had feels more like a mastectomy. I feel so emotional and horrid about myself since having my surgery a few days ago

Hey, I’ve never posted on anything like this before. I was diagnosed with breast cancer early stage and had a lumpectomy however the amount they have taken it’s more of a mastectomy. I feel very emotional atm about this as I wasn’t expecting that I would feel this way. I had my surgery a few days ago and already feel horrid about myself and I’ve been looking online and they say could take up to a year to get any reconstructive procedures. I hide my emotions with everyone including everyone close to me and I don’t know what to do with these feelings. Anyone else feel the same ? Or felt the same in the past.

  • Hi Ter09,

A very warm welcome to Cancer Chat and I wanted you to know that you are not alone here. What you have been through recently is bound to make you emotional especially if you feel that the amount they have taken out is more of a mastectomy than a lumpectomy - your medical team will be able to clarify exactly what procedure was carried out. It is completely normal to feel this way but you only had the surgery a few days ago so it's still early days post recovery and it might take a little bit of time for everything to settle down and at the moment you are still feeling the psychological and physical impact of it all. Despite everything you've been through, it's good that the breast cancer  was caught at an early stage and I hope that your recovery from surgery will go well. I thought I would share with you the section on our website on surgery for breast cancer where you will find out more about the lumpectomy and mastectomy and there is also a page on breast reconstruction

Poor you it must be really hard to bottle up all these emotions even from your loved ones and I hope that you can manage to offload and talk to someone close to you that you feel would listen and understand - it might also be worth getting in touch with your GP and explaining how you have been feeling since your surgery and I am sure your doctor will have some good suggestions to help you feel a bit better.

I will now let other members of our community come and share their own experiences - I am sure many on here will relate to how you are feeling after your surgery and they will be able to tell you - better than anyone for they have been there before - what to expect in the coming days and weeks and I hope that they will be happy to share with you how they felt after the surgery and how things gradually improved for them.

Wishing you a quick and full recovery and that you soon feel better both on a physical and emotional level.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Thank you, I have been told it was a lumpectomy as there is breast left however not a lot. I think it’s just going to be a long process and I am still a little shocked.
