Positive smear -

Hello,

I’m just wanting someone to talk to really and for people to share their experiences.

I had a smear test last year and tested positive for HPV but no abnormal cells - I was told this was very common and would be recalled for a smear the following year.

In October last year, I started bleeding irregularly and very heavy. This was out the blue as I was on the mini pill and my periods had been very much nonexistent and light spotting here and there. I went to the doctors and was told it was possibly down to the pill and asked me to have some swabs done. There’s were rearranged a number of times due to the bleeding and came back normal. I was then referred for a tummy scan of the uterus to check for polyps and cysts.

I had a scan which showed a polyp in my uterus and I was then referred to gynaecology. They are wanting to do a hystrocopy, a poly removal and something else. Whilst I was there the nurse also did a smear. This has now come back and is - high grade dyskaryosis (moderate) and high risk HPV detected.

I haven’t had chance to speak to someone as these results were just viewed online but I hope to make an appointment with my doctor this week.

Please can someone shed some light on what this means. I have googled but getting mixed messages. I just thought this may be the best place to ask.

I am incredibly scared it’s cancer. I have two young children and I am a single parent. My mum died around 8 years ago with cancer so my support network is very small.

Any responses would be greatly appreciated x
