Head & Neck/ CUP

I was diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma and operated on in early 2022. The pathology results then linked this to breast cancer. Despite repeated tests, to date (June2025) there is still no link to breast cancer. Eventually after another situation being identified in my mouth, in January 2024 I had a Parotidectomy and 2 tumours removed. Eventually after months of further scans and yet another tumour starting in my cheek, my was referred to Oncology after me insisting that someone other thaw Max-Fac surgeon, take charge of my case. I’m was referred to a Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) oncologist. 18 weeks of chemotherapy ended in early February 2025. However soon after, 2 further tumours were identified in my cheek area, near the bottom jawline this time. I was then passed onto a Head & Neck oncologist who decided Radiotherapy was the best option. 10 days of radiotherapy (ending early April 2025) left me with an incredibly painful “burnt” mouth which took about 3 weeks to heal. I am currently awaiting fresh PET scans (2 spots in the vertebrae were also picked up). There is huge frustration at the length of time scan reporting is taking and I am frustrated that the only time I appear to have any urgency applied is when I complain to the hospital. I was told in September 2024 that the prognosis is 2 - 2.5 years, so I hope anyone reading this can understand my frustration at this system in the NHS. Interestingly I have also been told mine is a rare case and yet there does not appear to be any effort being made to learn from it and perhaps be more proactive in the future!

  • Hello Readabook

I'm sorry to hear about all that you've been through. It's perfectly understandable that you've been feeling so frustrated with how things have progressed since your initial diagnosis in 2022 and that you feel the only time there is any urgency with your care is when you complain. It's certainly not a helpful experience to the patient when you're left feeling so unsupported.

I'm glad to hear that your radiotherapy burns have finally healed. I know from the many posts I've read here on the forum over the years how gruelling head and neck radiotherapy can be and many of our members who have been through that treatment will understand just how difficult things may have been for you over the past 2 months. I hope that you're not struggling with too many side effects of the treatment now.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your new PET scans, and the team will be able to pass on the results to you in a timely fashion. We know that many hospitals across the UK are experiencing delays in being able to read scan results quickly due to the number of specialist doctors available to do this work. But I know that that doesn't make it any easier for you as the patient waiting for news.

If it would help to talk things through with one of our nurses at any point you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

I hope you have some positive news soon Readabook. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We're here for you.

    Best wishes,
