Referral to urgent Suspected Cancer Lower GI received in Text Message from GP

I have had tummy and bowel problems for 18 months now various tests carried out and nothing serious discovered. I have had 3 fit tests in the last 18 months all <4 I had a Calprotectin level 160 and low iron levels so I went back to my GP last Friday to discus my results.
The Doctor asked how I felt I was still in pain and he suggested I have a Colonoscopy which I agreed was a good idea and he told me that he was going to request me being seen in within two weeks and if I hadn’t heard anything after 3 weeks to contact the surgery. I was in the doctors office for exactly 7 minutes.

I then received a text message from the surgery with a link to a referral I put my date of birth in and the referral came up as your cancer referral. I have been referred to Urgent suspected cancel lower GI assessment unit.
at no time was Cancer mentioned during my GP appointment I also noticed that one of the questions said , Has the patient been counselled and they are being referred to a suspected cancer service and why ? my GP has said yes which is not true. The receptionist had added to my Heath Record Provision of written information about cancer (procedure) and in Highlighted large font in the NHS app it says Suspected Collateral Cancer

well  you can imagine what kind of weekend I have had Ofcourse I want to find out what causes my tummy and bowel problems but surely my GP should have spent more time with me and explained all this to me and not just 7 minutes. I feel totally devastated by my GP’s lack of compassion.

  • Oh my that is an awful way to find out that you may have cancer. I am so sorry you are going through this.

As you say getting tested and finding out what is causing your symptoms is the most important things but if you feel up to it write down what you feel about the way this has or rather hadnt been communicated to you and address it to the lead gp / practice manager.

Your feed back may help prevent someone else being dealt with in the way you were and also let them know how you feel

Keep it polite you will need to deal with them again at some point

Meanwhile write down what you want to adk at your GI appointment and if they dont explain enough ask ask ask

If you can take a friend for support

I hope this helps a little to know you are heard and not alone

    Sending positive thoughts your way

  • Oh I thank you for your reply and your kind thoughts it means so much to me and yes you are right I will be addressing  the issues I have with my GP and I have made some notes!
I received a phone call from the hospital yesterday and  a consultant will be ringing on Friday Morning to discuss my referral and symptoms and next steps they  said my Doctor  will have discussed this with me (obviously he hadn’t) and I told them they apologised and tried to put my mind at ease I am now going through the important points and preparing myself for the call with the consultant tomorrow including questions I want to ask
