Scared for my mum - whilst her breast cancer was being treated, her lung cancer has spread. What will her prognosis and quality of life be like?

Hello everyone.

my name is Pamela.

my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer and lung cancer. The breast and lymph under arm was stage three so the focus was dealing with this surgically whilst keeping an eye on the small slow growing lung Timor. Surgery went well and breast was clear but due to waiting waiting and more waiting the lung part which was due to be treated with radiotherapy with a curative outcome, had spread to liver, lymph in chest wall and l4 verterbrae. This was a lot to deal with and very frustrating as it could have been dealt with sooner and contained. That aside mum started chemo therapy and immunotherapy on Monday gone and was staying positive. She has had many temp spikes, hospital admittance and also told it’s spread to bowel and neck of femur even though this was on the pet scan showing the other metastasing as mentioned. Not sure why this only came up and we are all devastated to say the least. Mam has terrible pain in her back along with other side effects and symptoms. She is saying she doesn’t think she can cope with chemo if there’s no great improvement as the side affects have meant lots of admissions and extra problems. Can anyone help with a similar experience of prognosis, and quality of life please. I am scared, worried, anxious and just want to know realistically what we are facing now.

thanks in advance for your help

  • Welcome to the forum Pamela although I'm so sorry to hear what has happened with your mum.

I can't begin to imagine what you must all be going through at the moment, but we are here for you Pamela and hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar position with their loved ones will be along soon to share their experiences with you.

We do have some general information about advanced lung cancer on our website but to find out more about your mum's potential prognosis and quality of life I would suggest giving our team of cancer nurses a call as with their knowledge and insight they will be in a better position to answer your questions and address any other worries and concerns you may have at this time. If you'd like to speak with them, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

The road ahead will be tough but I hope sharing your thoughts and feelings with others who are also on this journey will give you much strength and comfort at this very challenging time.

    Kind regards,
