After breast cancer

I had grade 2 breast cancer back in 2023 and had a lumpectomy , radiotherapy and onTamoxifen now which I’ve been tolerating well. I wanted to ask about any lifestyle changes people have made afterwards? I get so worried every time I have a glass of wine or eat something that’s not super healthy! I feel like if it comes back then I would only have myself to blame. Really interested to hear from others who have been through breast cancer treatment and how they manage things going forward!

  • Hi Jolene12,

I'm glad to hear that you have been coping fairly well with Tamoxifen. I had 2 bouts of breast cancer and 1 of pre-cancer, within a year of each other. I took Tamoxifen for the first year, but changed to Letrozole, when I discovered the second cancer. It is now 15 years since I was first diagnosed and I still live a busy and fulfilling life. I can't say that I have changed my diet drastically since I had my surgeries. I have always eaten healthily and only drink in moderation.  I also lost my mum to metatastic breast cancer 27 years ago. Like me, she had always eaten healthily. She enjoyed the occasional glass of wine prior to her diagnosis and alcohol never touched her lips from the day she was diagnosed, but sadly, we lost her despite this.

The only differences that I have made were that I have cut down on the amount of red meat that I used to eat and increased my fish, fruit and vegetable intake. I have reduced my dairy intake. I still enjoy the occasional glass of wine, but never drink to excess.

Have a word with your care team and see what they suggest - mine advised all things in moderation.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
