Newbie - 70 year old diagnosed with stage 2 lung cancer last year

Hi everyone, my name is Pat, I’m married with one son who also has one son and it’s his 47th birthday today!  I’m 70 years old (16 in my head ) and I live in Stoke on Trent.  I worked in Mental Health Services in the NHS for 36 years as an Exec Assistant to the Director of Nursing, and now happily retired. I was diagnosed on 1 October 2024 with Stage 2 Lung Cancer and Stage 1 Lymphnodes, I had a bilobectomy on my R lung on 8 October, the day after we should have been going to Graceland for our once in a lifetime trip!  Anyhow, surgery successful, had one IV chemo with oral tablet and had a reaction so ended up in hospital with neutropenic sepsis which thankfully I have now recovered from.  It’s too risky for me to have chemo again so should have been going down the radiotherapy route but was told yesterday that the risk would far outweigh the small benefit it would give me.  I’m at high risk of the cancer coming back but having no further treatment atm because my scan showed no sign of cancer so I will be having regular scans and long term monitoring for how ever long.  Well that’s me, wishing everyone one well in the chat the very best with your treatment and beyond.

  • Hi Pat and a very warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

Thank you for sharing your story and your sense of humour. It's always great to be 16 in your head no matter what age you are!

You must have been gutted to miss that once in a lifetime trip to Graceland because you had to have that important bilobectomy but it was worth it if the surgery was successful and I hope you will one day get a chance to go again. I am so sorry to hear though that you had such a dreadful reaction to the chemotherapy and ended up in hospital and that you are not able to have radiotherapy either. At least your scan is showing no sign of cancer so that must be a relief and I am glad that they will be monitoring you closely long term.

I hope that you will hear from others here on the forum who have also had a lung cancer diagnosis and that they will pop by shortly and drop you a line here.

    Best wishes,
