FIT Test Advice Please

It’s my first time here and wondering if anyone can clarify my FIT test result which came back as 65 so my GP referred me to a Colorectal surgeon. I had the test because of a drastic change in my bowel habits which lasted almost 2 weeks but now seems to have settled down. However I did a Google search on FIT levels and it said the result of the ROUTINE bowel screening test needed to be 180 or higher in England to need a referral so why would I need a referral if my result was only 65? I’m confused because now I’m told I need a colonoscopy to rule out cancer and it sounds like a very unpleasant procedure which I initially refused, but a very nice colorectal nurse reassured me it would be for the best and I agreed. Is 65 considered high and is it anything to worry about?

  • Generally, anything over 10 is considered a positive result and means that some blood has been found in the stool, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's cancer or anything else serious. Lots of things can cause blood in the stool from hemorrhoids to cancer and many things in between - polyps, Crohn's, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, a fissure, an infection...

From what I've read, I think about one in ten positive FIT results are cancer and honestly, it's best to get the colonoscopy if only to reassure yourself that it is not anything serious. Also, the colonoscopy is not only for cancer. If you have a polyp, it should be removed because there is a slight chance it could develop into cancer in the future and if you have ulcerative colitis or Crohn's or diverticulitis, you want to know about that so it can be treated too.

Even if they find hemorrhoids, they will probably band them to prevent them from causing you any more problems.

The colonoscopy is not a very nice procedure, but it's not that bad and it will allow them not only to find out if you have cancer (which you probably don't) but also what is causing your change in bowel habits and may also remove any polyps and thereby greatly reduce the chance of you getting bowel cancer in the future.

I'd guess they be more likely to refer you than to refer somebody who got the same result through a routine screening as you did also have some symptoms and that increases the chance there is something amiss. Again not necessarily cancer, but something that should be investigated.
