Caring for my mum

Hi everyone,

I am caring for my mum who is 96, I have just recovered news that my mum's Fit test has come back positive for blood. She does have other symptoms like bloating, no appetite, lost a lot of weight, itching all over etc. The doctors do believe that she has cancer. We have opted for no further treatment as it would be too invasive for her. We have also opted not to tell her. I just wondered if there is anyone else that has gone through this with an elder patient. Also does Cancer research accept patients that have all the symptoms but not been actually diagnosed as Cancer?

Thank you for reading this xx

  • Welcome to the forum Poppy-Loppy although I'm sorry to hear about your mum. This must have been a very difficult decision to make.

A lot of our members have been in a similar position with their loved ones so they will know what you and your family are going through right now, so you are not alone Poppy-Loppy, and I'm sure it won't be long until some of them stop by to offer their support and advice.

I hope your mum's medical team have been able to give you a rough idea of what will happen next but if you'd like to speak with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very easy to talk to and will do all that they can to help.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you Steph, that’s very kind of you. We are just waiting for the frailty team to come in and assess her for a hospital bed and any other equipment she may need.
