Caring for my mum with cancer

Hi

My mum is currently in NCH waiting to come home after her recent admission for a bowel blockage. She had surgery in July 24 to her bowel and 4 rounds of chemo. Fast forward to now, the cancer has now spread to her stomach  liver and lungs, the blockage remains and surgery no longer a option. She is coming home with medication and will be on palliative care. They have given a timeline of a few months. The roles have reverses as my mums mum had the exact diagnosis and passed away at the age of 70.

After everything she's been through I do feel she is worse off now than she has ever been.

I cry everyday but trying so hard to be strong but we have had so much conflicting information by the professionals it's hard to know what's right.

  • Hi Emya1976

I am so sorry to read all you and your mum are going through.  Its good to cry and let emotions out, it helps you to keep strong as you are,so strong and keep going to support your mum.  Could you contact your local hospice for advice and support if you have one.  Or I am sure the moderators on here will reply and give you the number to speak with the nurses on here, open on Monday to Friday I believe.  I just wanted to say your not alone and others will come along and hopefully offer you more help and advice than I can.  sending hugs take care x

  • Thank you for your reply, I'm hoping to bring her home Tuesday and my mum has agreed to visit the Maggies source centre with me on leaving the hospital. I am also confident that the dietician and ot have been too so we can get her out and about a little at a time.

  • Hi Emya1976

We visited a Maggies Centre who were very helpful too so that s good and about the Dietician.  You enjoy every moment yout mum is lucky to have you and getting out and about a little will really be good.  You are stronger than you know,  I wish both the best and hugs to you both.  Take care both of you xx
